Typical Tuesday

Today we benefitted from another full day of field and river walking, visiting more herbs and each sharing the information we had gathered about the specific plants that we were assigned. We learned about American Skullcap, Valerian root, Wild Oats, Centella, Black Radish, Ashwaganda, Chaste berry, St John’s Wort, and then some and beyond referring to the indications/contraindications, actions, energetics and historical uses, we collectively discussed our experiences with these plants and what they embody for us in clinical practice. It was a momentous experience in that we were required to imagine how we would utilize this information in the very near future. I am thankful for this challenge and hope to continue to be presented with the opportunity to think in this fashion.

We returned to the classroom to finish up some group medicine making, sample our self-made products, study a few more herbs and call it a day. We were all exhausted from the amount of information we were packing into our minds yet thrilled to taste test all that our blood sweat (and tears;) produced.

We thought that the day was over but we were oh so wrong. When official course work concluded, we decided that instead of napping in fear of missing out on some activity that NC may have around it’s next corner we would get out and explore. This is the land of 250 waterfalls and so my group decided that we would head out to view the tallest of them all. What a trek it was – we hiked about 2 miles down a large canyon to approach the foot of White Falls, where of course we found a swimming hole.

Over dinner following this adventure, we agreed that it felt as if we had lived an entire additional day. We also vowed that from there on we would force ourselves to take advantage of every waking moment and continue to explore, because Tuesdays gone and there will not be another – until the next time.
